SSC CGL Direction and Distance question with solution

Direction and DistanceModerateSSC CGL 2024

Pooja walks 9 km towards the north, then turns and walks 12 km towards the east. How far is Pooja from the starting point?

  1. (A)15 km
  2. (B)14 km
  3. (C)3 km
  4. (D)17 km

Correct answer: (A) 15 km

The two legs of the walk are at right angles, so the shortest distance from the start is the hypotenuse: √(9² + 12²) = √(81 + 144) = √225 = 15 km.

Shortcut: 9-12-15 is a Pythagorean triple.
