SSC CGL Algebra question with solution

AlgebraModerateSSC CGL 2024

If x − 1/x = 7, what is the value of x² + 1/x²?

  1. (A)51
  2. (B)47
  3. (C)49
  4. (D)53

Correct answer: (A) 51

Squaring both sides: (x − 1/x)² = x² + 1/x² − 2 = 49. Therefore x² + 1/x² = 49 + 2 = 51.

Shortcut: x² + 1/x² = k² + 2 when x − 1/x = k.
