SSC CGL Algebra question with solution

AlgebraModerateSSC CGL 2024

If x − 1/x = 3, what is the value of x² + 1/x²?

  1. (A)9
  2. (B)6
  3. (C)11
  4. (D)7

Correct answer: (C) 11

Squaring both sides: (x − 1/x)² = x² + 1/x² − 2 = 9. Therefore x² + 1/x² = 9 + 2 = 11.

Shortcut: x² + 1/x² = k² + 2 when x − 1/x = k.
