SSC CGL Average question with solution

AverageModerateSSC CGL 2024

The average of 11 numbers is 47. If one number is removed, the average of the remaining numbers becomes 46. What is the removed number?

  1. (A)68
  2. (B)47
  3. (C)46
  4. (D)57

Correct answer: (D) 57

Sum of all 11 numbers = 11 × 47 = 517. Sum of the remaining 10 numbers = 10 × 46 = 460. The removed number is the difference: 517 − 460 = 57.

Shortcut: Removed number = old average + (n − 1) × (old average − new average) = 47 + 10 × (1).
