SSC CGL Percentage question with solution
PercentageModerate
The price of an item is first increased by 10% and then decreased by 10%. What is the net percentage change in the price?
- (A)4% increase
- (B)1% increase
- (C)No change
- (D)1% decrease
Correct answer: (D) 1% decrease
Let the original price be 100. After a 10% increase it becomes 110. A 10% decrease on 110 gives 110 × 90 ÷ 100 = 99. The net change is 99 − 100 = -1, i.e. 1% decrease.
Shortcut: Net % change = a − b − ab/100 = 10 − 10 − 1 = -1%.
