SSC CGL Percentage question with solution
PercentageModerate
The price of an item is first increased by 40% and then decreased by 40%. What is the net percentage change in the price?
- (A)16% increase
- (B)11% decrease
- (C)No change
- (D)16% decrease
Correct answer: (D) 16% decrease
Let the original price be 100. After a 40% increase it becomes 140. A 40% decrease on 140 gives 140 × 60 ÷ 100 = 84. The net change is 84 − 100 = -16, i.e. 16% decrease.
Shortcut: Net % change = a − b − ab/100 = 40 − 40 − 16 = -16%.
